Robert J. Snyder, MD
Robert J. Synder, MD
Dr. Bob Snyder joined OSC in 1994. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon in Newport News whose practice is primarily focused on arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder, as well as total joint replacement and treatment for sports-related injuries. Dr. Snyder is a competitive handball player and has also had a partial knee replacement. As an active athlete, he greatly understands a patient’s drive to return to the game quickly and with the best performance level possible. His personal experience with knee replacement and arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder, ankle and knee, help him to better understand patients who are feeling pain and discomfort from their musculoskeletal conditions.
Dr. Snyder spent many years in the U.S. Army, finishing his military career as the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Dr. Snyder retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994, which is the year he joined OSC. Dr. Snyder was the first orthopaedic surgeon in the area to utilize the ConforMis partial and total knee replacement system. ConforMis is a computer mapped, patient-specific knee replacement system designed to conform to the patient’s unique anatomy. This results in a less traumatic procedure, significant bone preservation, natural feel and superior fit.
Dr. Snyder and his wife Candy have four children, four grandchildren, three Golden Retrievers and five cats. Dr. Snyder has played competitive handball for over 40 years, playing on average three times per week. He often travels great distances for handball tournaments. Dr. Snyder also enjoys running and golf, when he finds the time.

Jeffrey R. Carlson, MD
Jeffrey R. Carlson, MD
Dr. Jeffrey Carlson joined OSC in 1999, and serves as the President and Managing Partner. He is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon who focuses on the treatment of injuries and disorders of the spine. Dr. Carlson also sees patients for a wide variety of general orthopedic issues and problems and favors conservative treatment for his patients. He is a thought leader and pioneer in the development and implementation of outpatient spinal surgery procedures and techniques, including Less-Exposure Spine Surgery (LESS), which is minimally invasive, and less traumatic for the patient. He actively seeks new and advanced technologies as treatment options, carefully selecting those that will offer the best outcomes for his patients.
Dr. Carlson received his B.S. from the University of Maryland, and promptly began medical school at George Washington University. Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Carlson did an internship in General Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Post-graduate training included his residency at Harvard University, and two fellowships. One was in Orthopaedic Trauma surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the other a combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Fellowship in Spine Surgery at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Carlson was also an instructor of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at Harvard University before joining OSC. Dr. Carlson is the first fellowship-trained spine surgeon on the Virginia Peninsula.
As an orthopedist, Dr. Carlson stays actively involved in continuing medical education by teaching spine surgery techniques around the world. Dr. Carlson recently served as the Chief of Surgery at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, VA. He has received many awards, including being named one of America’s Top Orthopaedic Spine Reconstructive Surgeons, earning the Arthritis Foundation’s Medical Excellence Award and being included in Becker’s Specialty Review “Spine Surgeons to Know.” In addition to his busy clinical schedule, Dr. Carlson enjoys weight training, jet skiing and playing soccer with his family.

Martin R. Coleman, MD
Martin R. Coleman, MD
Dr. Martin Coleman is a sports medicine physician and orthopaedic surgeon who joined OSC in 2002. Dr. Coleman received his undergraduate degree at Harvard College, and went to medical school at the New York University School of Medicine. Upon completion of medical school, he interned and did his first year residency in General Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Coleman then completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the same facility. His first appointment was in Orthopaedic Surgery at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, WV. Dr. Coleman opened his own practice in 1985 in Havertown, PA, which he operated until relocating to Hampton Roads, Virginia, to join OSC in 2002.
Dr. Coleman’s practice includes orthopaedic and sports medicine, but he has a special interest in the care and treatment of disorders of the shoulder. As the technology has advanced over the years, he has adapted arthroscopic surgical techniques to treat severe tendonitis and rotator cuff tears almost exclusively by way of minimally-invasive techniques that result in a more comfortable recovery for his patients. Dr. Coleman is also especially excited about reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, a type of replacement that can provide a solution for patients with arthritis and chronic cuff tears who could not be helped in the past. In addition to his extensive medical commitments, Dr. Coleman enjoys traveling, movies, good books and spending time with his family.

Mark W. McFarland, DO
Mark W. McFarland, DO
Dr. Mark McFarland joined OSC in 2005. He is a board-certified and fellowship-trained Spine Specialist. His practice is focused primarily on the care and treatment of injuries and disorders of the spine. He specializes in Less-Exposure Spine Surgery (LESS), which is minimally invasive and is less traumatic for the patient. Because of recent advancements in spine surgery technique and instrumentation, many spine surgeries can be performed as outpatient procedures. For most other surgeries, the patient will need to spend only one night in the hospital. Dr. McFarland also performs knee replacements and he sees patients with general orthopaedic needs as well.
In July, 2010, Dr. McFarland performed the first outpatient total hip replacement in the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area, using an approach from the front of the body which spares muscle and minimizes blood loss. The patient went home eight hours after the surgery. We had pre-arranged home health care for this patient, so he was well taken care of when he went home.
Dr. McFarland completed an in-office kyphoplasty at OSC in July, 2012, which is believed to be a first in this geographic region. This procedure is typically done in a hospital setting, but because of recent developments, including more sophisticated surgical kits and local anesthesia techniques, OSC is now able to do kyphoplasty as an in-office procedure. Dr. McFarland states that this equipment eliminates (for the majority of people) the need for general anesthesia. As a result, this makes it easy for a physician to do this procedure in an office setting, using live x-ray technology to assure accuracy during the procedure.
Dr. McFarland also specializes in osteopathic medicine, which emphasizes health education, injury prevention and disease prevention. In addition to his extensive medical commitments, Dr. McFarland enjoys hiking, water-sports, golf and quality time with his family.

Raj N. Sureja, MD
Raj N. Sureja, MD
Dr. Raj Sureja joined OSC in 2008 as a board-certified, fellowship-trained Interventional Pain Management Doctor. His practice is focused on pain reduction of the spine and spine-related disorders through minimally-invasive interventional procedures. Dr. Sureja enjoys being a pain management specialist because he feels tremendous personal and professional satisfaction in being able to help people feel better. Dr. Sureja has been named a “Top Doc” in Pain Medicine every year since 2012 by Coastal Virginia Magazine, chosen by his peers in the medical community.
His favorite therapies to perform are vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and spinal cord stimulation because patients typically see results immediately and they can be done in-office at OSC. In fact, Dr. Sureja was the first physician in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia to perform an in-office vertebroplasty and one of two to perform in-office kyphoplasty. Dr. Sureja has an excellent rate of success with his patients who are treated with spinal cord stimulation. He firmly believes that this orthopedic technology works for the great benefit of the patient.
With these therapies, Dr. Sureja sees amazing improvements in quality of life for patients young and old, and several of our patients have returned to high level physical activity such as running, competitive swimming, and horseback riding.
In addition to his medical commitments, Dr. Sureja leads a busy personal life. He is married to his medical school sweetheart, who is a practicing Radiologist, specializing in Women’s Breast Health. He is the proud father of twins, Vivienne and Gabriel, and younger daughter named Adeline. When he’s not spending time with his family, Dr. Sureja is an avid golfer, triathlete and runner. He is an age-group winner of many 5k and 10k races. Dr. Sureja is also a huge Baltimore Ravens and Orioles fan, and enjoys playing cornhole, pickup basketball, and bocce.

Jenny L. F. Andrus, MD
Jenny L. F. Andrus, MD
Dr. Jenny Andrus is a fellowship-trained interventional pain management physician who joined OSC in 2009. Her practice focuses on the treatment of painful musculoskeletal and neurologic disorders. Her practice focuses on improving function and quality of life.
Dr. Andrus is fellowship-trained in minimally invasive procedures such as epidural injections. She performs selective injections to effectively target the pain source. Dr. Andrus is one of the areas most experienced physicians in neuromodulation (spinal cord stimulation) and has an excellent success rate with this for back and leg pain as well as neuropathy. Dr. Andrus also performs electrodiagnsotic studies which are often crucial in diagnosing the cause of pain.
